The research objects of ethnic archaeology include ethnic minorities or groups that maintain traditional production, lifestyle, and marriage patterns, as well as social organizations and ideologies. In addition, it also includes cultural relics unearthed from archaeology, certain historical records, and legends. Through these studies, ethnic archaeology not only explores the origin and development of ancient civilizations, but also provides an important perspective for understanding the historical evolution of human society.

China's ethnic archaeology has a profound historical foundation. As early as the early 20th century, scholars began to pay attention to the correlation between ethnological and archaeological materials and applied them in their research. With the passage of time, ethnic archaeology has further developed and improved in China, especially after the establishment of the People's Republic of China.
