Documentary Studies "is not a magazine, but a systematic exposition of documentary theory written by Nie Xinru and published by Fudan University Press in 2010. This book comprehensively and deeply explores the origin, development, genres, classification, definition, narrative, and composition of documentaries, providing rich academic resources for documentary researchers and readers interested in documentary theory.

Professor Nie Xinru, with her profound background and rich practical experience in the field of film and television, has conducted a detailed analysis and discussion on documentaries. The book not only reviews the historical background of the birth of documentaries around the 1930s, but also delves into the contributions of film masters to the development of documentaries, as well as the rise of the two important genres of "direct film" and "real film" in the 1950s and 1960s and the aesthetic concepts they represent.
